Sewing My Life Together

Paper Piecing and Other Stuff

OK. Yesterday for Christmas I gave my sister a hostess gift, which is a beautiful bag made from an Amy Butler pattern called “Birdie Sling” out of these fabrics:

The black and white check is the body of the bag, the black, white and red triangles are the border and strap, and the red is the lining.

You can see the pattern at www.amybutlerdesign.com., or here:

This is the illustration of the bag. It's deep and roomy.

(And no, I did not take a photo of the finished product).

I also gifted another sister with a landscape:

Since I have been spending all of December readying cards, making landscapes, bags to give as gifts:

I decided today to begin a new, more complicated project. I am going to teach myself to paper piece, following a pattern, and try to make this:

Olive Wall

This is a pattern called “Olive Wall” by carolyn friedlander. and can be found at http://www.carolynfriedlander.com. It calls for paper piecing, and the instructions do not tell the reader how to do it. So, I decided to spend some time trying to learn it.

First I went to some written directions, which I read and still was confused.

Written Instructions:

So, still uncertain about what it was, I checked out some videos and am now excited to try:

Perhaps I am jumping in too quickly, but I learn best by doing. So tonight I will start!
