Well, because I’ve been making products for the December 21 crafts fair at my school my sewing area has become a little messy…..well, really, really messy. So today I took stock: I looked at this huge mess I had made.
I could not believe how long I have been ignoring this. I know I have a ton of ugly fabric that I have been given that I simply put on the shelf…I have been working primarily with bright colors and shapes, and batiks….I am so not interested in florals and dull colors. So I hoofed it to Target and I bought a BIG PLASTIC BOX….and some fabric baskets. And I took out every single piece of fabric, looked at it, sorted it into ugly, nice, likely to use, folded it and put it in its place. And now this is what my shelves look like:
This is what the shelves look like now: in each of these bins are sets of fabric color coded. I moved all the ugly fabric (see images below) into my BIG PLASTIC BOX to be stored in the basement:
So here is my BIG PLASTIC BOX which is so full of ugly fabric that I will have to ask my husband to lug it downstairs. At least I can look at it and see what I actually have if I should ever decide to use some of these. Perhaps in the spring I can offer a fabric swap….
And since I have so many small pieces of fabric that I might use in another project, I purchased small clear shoe boxes and color coded the ‘little bits’ of fabric and shelved on top of my bookcase.

Since I make cards and small fabric landscapes, I know I will come back to these boxes to finish projects.
There are still several ‘piles’ in the sewing area that I have yet to organize but I feel proud to have accomplished all this in a few hours.
Whew……
That’s a good idea to corral all the uglies. I use my uglies for testing thread tension, ideas, etc. It would be good to get them away from the pretty fabrics and out of the immediate storage space. I notice your room is the same color as my sewing room…
